Job Description:

The scope of work for the Legacy Warehouse Data Integration project includes data gap analysis, data structure design (working with a data architect), SQL code development (ETL components using Blackboard Analytics' architecture), SSAS cube development (dimensions, hierarchies, measures, data source views, etc), and report development using Pyramid Analytics' BioXL.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND:

Client is in the process of implementing an enterprise decision support data warehouse which will include data from PeopleSoft accounting, student information, and human resources systems. The core of the system includes a data model licensed from Blackboard Analytics which includes four modules: Finance, Student Records, Financial Aid, and Human Resources. Two of the four modules have been implemented and released into production, while work continues to implement the remainder of the licensed products. The data warehouse resides on Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL), with reporting predominantly from a set of OLAP cubes deployed in Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). The reporting infrastructure will include Pyramid Analytics' BioXL and BioPoint reporting and dashboard tools, as well as limited support for centralized Microsoft Reporting Services.

An older data warehouse exists, developed by SAS and stored in an Oracle database. The older warehouse includes data structures for curriculum tracking, retention, student enrollment, facilities management, and faculty productivity. Much of this data already exists in the new Blackboard Analytics data model, but not all of it - and not necessarily packaged in the way it is needed for reporting. The older data warehouse is scheduled for decommissioning, and it is necessary to enhance the new vendor-provided data model to incorporate any missing data, develop replacement reports, and potentially load historical data into the newer data warehouse. Client is beginning a project to integrate the additional data into the new data warehouse in parallel with the ongoing implementation of the remaining Blackboard Analytics modules. Existing technical resources are already fully committed to other projects, so the client is looking to contract a business intelligence developer (BI Developer) for 10 months (end time fixed, start time variable) to perform the necessary development functions.

PLACE OF PERFORMANCE:

The selected BI Developer for the Legacy Warehouse Data Integration project will perform a majority of the work remotely. The developer will be required to work at client location one day per week (day TBD) for weekly status meetings, planning, and development reviews. Client will provide desk space and arrange for meeting spaces within its facility for all required work days and meetings.

WORK REQUIREMENTS:

As part of the Legacy Warehouse Data Integration project the BI Developer will be responsible for performing tasks throughout various stages of this project. The following is a summary of these tasks which will result in the successful completion of this project:

Gap Analysis:

  • Produce an inventory of needed reports and report objects, working with both the existing reports in the Legacy Data Warehouse and the user community, and including a priority order of development
  • Create and present detailed description of the data elements within the SAS-designed legacy data warehouse, with a determination of which data elements are needed and do not exist in the new decision support system in a useable form
  • Extract, analyze and document the logic behind each needed data element which does not exist in the new decision support system, and provide this to the data architect and the project team.

Planning:

  • Participate in project planning efforts to develop an overall project plan, project schedule, risk inventory, and performance plan, as well as other planning efforts.

Design:

  • Work with Client staff and others to gather and document requirements and establish metrics
  • Work with project data architect to design data structures to incorporate needed data elements identified during based on collected requirements.

Development:

  • Develop data structures or enhance existing structures in the Blackboard Analytics' data model for client review and approval, using T-SQL and Business Intelligence Development Studio in the SQL Server and Analysis Services environments
  • Implement designs in a non-production environment, test those designs, and work with client subject matter experts to validate the data and the embedded logic
  • Document development efforts and work with ITS staff to implement approved data structures and changes into the production environment
  • Develop reports for use by end-users in the Pyramid Analytics BioXL environment
  • Present written status at weekly meeting
