Position: Linux engineer

Location:Boston cambridge

Duration:5 months but the contract is for 3-4 years


 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Red Hat Administrator will work with various highly-visible IT Solution partners (contractors, sub-contractors, and Lockheed Martin professionals) configuring and supporting custom servers using a Linux platform and configuration in order to securely transfer genomic and exomic data according to government requirements to the Veteran's Administration for the Million Veteran Program (MVP).

SECURITY REQUIREMENTS

Candidate must be able to obtain NACI-Low level security clearance.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

·         Build, upgrade and configure custom ordered servers spanning on a Linux platform and configuration, desktop support, configure firewalls from scratch.

·         Know the process for patching, network structure, firewall and how it flows into the servers.

·         Monitor, troubleshoot and repair upgraded servers with hardware and network problems

·         Implement security access for storage and transmission of whole genome and whole exome sequencing data generated for a VA Genomics project to create user accounts and to regulate controlled data access

·         Monitor IT systems and protect secure genomic data against unauthorized disclosure, accidental or intentional loss of data, or unauthorized modification

·         Document, maintain and enforce Standard Operation Procedures and security policies, consistent with the federal and health-care security standards

·         Perform Vulnerability Assessments of systems and networks using both automated and manual methods

·         Implement applications to alert any breach in data access

·         Report any potential or actual breach of data security to Security Incident Response Team based on the security policies

·         Report weekly and monthly about system and data security statuses and incidents

·         Follow security protocols in handling large-scale data

·         Interface with the data managers/administrators and educate them about standard policies for secure data transfer

·         Assist in all aspects of data movement between VA and the sequencing center - data delivery, data packaging, shipping & data sanitization

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

·         Information Systems or related computer-based degree preferred

·         Industry recognized certifications in networking: CCNA required, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP a plus

Experience

·         5 years of experience as a Red Hat Administrator (Intermediate level, SME isn't a requirement)

·         Red Hat versions 5 or 6

·         3-5 years of Windows Desktop Support

·         Network Architecture experience preferred, but not required.

·         4 years of experience in server maintenance and patch administration

·         Experience conducting IT incident response investigations

·         Experience using Kickstart or Yom

·         Solid working knowledge and experience with Linux, PC and Server Hardware, Windows Server, or FreeBSD, and encryption protocol

·         Knowledge and experience of internet and networking technologies, i.e. TCP/IP, UDP, SMB, HTTP

·         Experience with networking and data access tools, ie.Wireshark, Metasploit, Nmap, Active Directory

·         Build process with servers, process for patching, network structure, firewall and how it flows into the servers. Solid knowledge and experience administering Windows or Unix based operating systems

·         Data security experience with federal agencies (DoD, NIH & FDA) preferred

·         Skills

·         Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation), interacting with high level executives

·         Problem solving, being able to give input and offer solutions on how to make this project a success from an IT perspective

·         Ability to document security incidents and events clearly and succinctly

·         Ability to work independently with a lot of structure in place

·         Works well under pressure

·         Ability to work well in a customer service focused role

·         Knowledge of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Security Standards a plus

 

Job Expectations

Installation:

·         Documenting Internet Protocol Address (IP) schema

·         Assigning IP to the appropriate devices

·         Staging the servers

·         Installing Operating System (Linux/RedHat, Windows, etc.) and loading the appropriate software on the servers

·         Patching Operation System (OS)/software to the appropriate levels

·         Capture deployed Image for future installs

·         Firewall configurations

·         Switch configurations

·         Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) configuration

·         Change all default passwords

·         Set up Network Time Protocol (NTP)

·         Domain Name Services (DNS) set up (if any)

Post Installation:

·         Validate network connectivity to the Internet

·         Validate network connectivity to the Internet using an Access Control List (ACL)

·         Validate connectivity to local host machine

·         Validate connectivity to local host machine using an Access Control List (ACL)

·         Back up firewall and switch configuration

·         Reboot all devices (firewall, switch, etc.) to make sure configuration did not change and startup configuration is working properly

·         Shut down ports not being used on firewall and switch

·         Test system by sending sample file, etc.

·         Patch Management, Testing and Deployment

·         Hard drive sanitation for reutilization of hardware

Maintain the technical environment to include:

·         Hardware

·         Databases

·         Storage Area Network (SAN) - if any

·         Backup and recovery of systems

·         Patching of systems

·         Firmware upgrades or updates

·         Trouble tracking and notification

·         Troubleshooting contact list

·         Daily monitoring of system logs
