Major biotech / pharmaceutical company in Thousand Oaks has a 1 Year+ contract position open for an experience Unix / Linux Systems Administrator.
The Systems Administrator will be responsible for supporting Unix / Linux high performance scientific computing systems and environments. The person will provide Unix / Linux system administration and scientific domain expertise support for scientific computing and informatics areas that enable small and large molecule drug discovery research.
This includes expertise and support for compute intensive, cutting edge genomics platforms, as well as computational biology, structural biology, and molecular modeling. The person is expected to function in a multidimensional team with IT business relationship managers and project managers, scientists, informaticians and other IT infrastructure support teams.
The Systems Administrator will provide systems administration support for software applications residing on high performance computing infrastructure, including server/OS development, deployment, test, maintenance, and server retirement. Will respond to scientists' needs by supporting in-house developed systems, integrating third-party systems, supporting research projects and troubleshooting issues.
The Systems Administrator will establish and maintain positive business relationships with project managers, service owners and end users. Will consistently demonstrate a thorough understanding of the customer's business, their processes, and their priorities, and use state-of-the-art techniques to ensure that system functionality and performance meet current and future business requirements by applying advanced theories, principles and concepts.
The Systems Administrator will maintain and demonstrate expert knowledge of information systems, technology and resources used by major segments of the client organization. Will be member of a geographically dispersed team providing 24/7 system administration support to the application owners and partners and will interface with research scientists resources located in South San Francisco, Thousand Oaks and other Research facilities.
The person will handle day-to-day operations of servers supporting scientific applications; will work with database and system administration support personnel, end users and vendors to convey, investigate and resolve system anomalies, including problem escalation. Strong inter-personal and communication skills and strong organizational skills are required In addition to technical expertise. All members of the team share rotating system administration support (7x24) to ensure system issues are identified and resolved, minimizing operations impacts.
Required Education:
Bachelor's degree and 5+ year(s) related experience
Required Skills:
- 5+ years experience in a systems administration or operational support role
- Demonstrated expertise of UNIX/LINUX based operating system
- RedHat Linux: Building and supporting servers and workstations; Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) certification or equivalent
- Scripting to automate repetitive tasks
- General understanding of DNS, LDAP, SNMP, User Administration
- Ability to program in at least one, preferably two administrative languages (sh, ksh, perl, etc.)
- Working knowledge of VMware
- Working knowledge of NAS infrastructure
- Ability to solve problems quickly and completely
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment and be self-motivated
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word)
- Ability to travel occasionally.
- Ability to work shift work.
Preferred Skills:
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification
- Windows System Administration
- OPSware
- Experience with Oracle or other relational databases
- IBM/Platform LSF
- Principles of SQL query language and operating systems
