At U.S. Cellular the Sr Security Engineer will be exposed to a variety of cutting edge security technology while working on our customer-service network. In addition, our teams actively participate within the security community to provide thought leadership to a variety of organizations(Blackhat-DefCom, Gartner, etc...) In this role you will plan, design, engineer, develop, implement, and troubleshoot security infrastructure technologies on the customer-servicing network. Provide subject matter expertise around specific technologies, such as carrier-grade and enterprise firewalls, IDS, IPS, VPN, etc. Provide project management for the deployment of customer-servicing and enterprise-wide projects. Act as vendor interface for design, implementation, and operational support of security infrastructure. Evaluate and implement new technologies, policies, and procedures for security engineering and operations. Perform analysis and prepare reports in support of data network monitoring, improvement, and regulatory compliance.

Role Specific Responsibilities

Support

  • Identify changes needed in service provider and Enterprise infrastructure design and configurations necessary to achieve the technology organization goals.
  • Actively participate in service provider infrastructure strategy reviews and design sessions by performing applicable network, system, application, database, and security analysis. 
  • Analyzes network & system response and determines tuning recommendations to improve performance, adhere to capacity management expectations, and provide performance management reporting.
  • Manage effective issue identification and resolution processes; Serve as a senior escalation point for all service provider network security operations issues with a degree of quality that results in absolute root-cause determination and drive vendor partners to provide quality assurances  by requiring immediate bug fixes, software updates, etc., as necessary to ensure an Ideal Customer Experience at all times.
  • Perform 24x7x365 advanced tier 2-3 support, to include but not limited to: troubleshooting, off-hour maintenance activities, problem resolution, and on-call rotation while ensuring all activities will adhere to the U.S. Cellular® Change Management policy.

Engineering

  • Conduct high-level and low-level designs for service provider and Enterprise security infrastructure projects.
  • Implements technology and service provider infrastructure changes. 
  • Lead interaction with partner organizations/departments to architect network or system solutions for our service provider infrastructure

Tools

  • Define requirements in support of budget plans and make recommendations for ways to improve performance and reduce costs.  Develop business cases that support changes to network and system infrastructure.
  • Develops network and system performance tools and integrates them into the existing infrastructure. 
  • Ensure communication of process and procedure changes to key stakeholders.
  • Design an effective test plan for any new / changed service provider infrastructure.
  • Develop full suite of documentation as it relates to the service provider network infrastructure (Engineering work plans, standards, policies and procedures.)
  • Support identification and collection of metrics and performance reporting processes
  • Identify process improvement areas and develop the improvement initiatives.
  • Determines Key Performance Indicators and infrastructure standards

 Skills

  • Research current industry technology to better facilitate vendor and partner communications
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) for relevant technologies
  • Requires minimal supervision to perform job duties.
  • Actively mentors other engineering staff
  • Actively maintains our current network infrastructure to expedite the resolution process
  • Evaluates new product/solutions for inclusion in our service provider network
  • Develop and deliver cross-training activities
  • Participates in, and encourages a knowledge-sharing environment both within, and outside the department
  • Develop and Maintain knowledge of internal network infrastructure, operations, and devices

 Business Partnership

  • Maintain relationships with the customers, associates, and vendors to proactively identify needed changes.
  • Establish working relationships with technical, business and sourcing counterparts.
  • Lead and participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • assembles cross-functional workgroups of key stakeholders to provide the direction of the various platforms
  •  Actively participates in industry/vendor forums to guide product development activities. 

 People Management

  • Manage individual workload and deliver to agreed-upon milestones.
  • Proactively promote consistent project-based performance measurement and skill development of junior staff.

 

 Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

 

The Network Security Engineer is expected to demonstrate technical knowledge of skills listed below.  The technical skills will depend on his/her specific responsibilities within the organization.

           Hardware:  Firewall - Palo Alto Networks, SonicWall, Cisco ASA/PIX, Juniper ScreenOS; VPN - IPSec/SSL-based solutions;  Intrusion Detection and/or Prevention - Radware DefensePro, Snort, Sourcefire;  Access Control Management - Cisco ACS, Open source RADIUS/TACACS solutions;  Messaging Security -  Cisco IronPort; Load balancers -  F5, Radware AppDirector and LinkProof;

  • O/S: UNIX (Solaris, BSD); Linux, Windows variants,
  • Languages: Perl, Bash, Ruby, Python
  • Application Software:  Penetration Testing tools, BIND, SendMail/PostFix, Syslog-NG, Security Event & Incident Management (SEIM); MySQL; Network sniffer tools (TCP Dump, WireShark); Forensics tools
  • Network Protocols:  TCP/IPv4, TCP/IPv6; Routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF;
  • Business Applications: Remedy Trouble Ticketing, Netcool, Infovista, and other system monitoring,
  • Office Automation:  Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, MS-Project, Visio
  • Bachelor's degree in related technical / business areas is preferred
  • Understanding of the business and/or industry
  • Experience re-engineering / process improvement
  • Strong change management skills; change agent
  • Excellent problem solving / analytical skills and knowledge of analytical tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to create / define metrics that accurately reflects the current state of a given process
Experience supporting mission-critical infrastructure in a fast-paced environment
