Job Description
UNIX System Engineers are responsible for performing and coordinating effective installation, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and general support of all UNIX operating system platforms.
Methodical troubleshooting, clear communications, thought leadership, and attention to detail are essential traits for achieving success in this role.
This position is responsible for the configuration and performance optimization of mission-critical systems in a mid-large scale customer facing environment.
Responsibilities also include strategically planning for the growth of the Unix infrastructure and proactively researching, recommending, and implementing new products as needed.
Job Responsibilities:
· System Resource Management: designs and supports server and storage sub-systems, system architecture, and supporting software, to include installation, configuration management, troubleshooting, research and testing, system health monitoring, performance analysis, pre-failure alerting, disaster recovery planning and documentation
· Hardware and Firmware Management duties as they pertain to server and related hardware components, to include on-line and spare parts inventory control, installation and configuration, management and troubleshooting, new technology research and testing, system health monitoring, performance analysis, pre-failure alerting, disaster recovery planning and exercise, firmware upgrade maintenance, pre-purchase evaluation, rack space management, design, and warranty repair coordination.
· Assist in performing SAN Zoning, SAN Provisioning, LUN masking and disk allocation functions.
· Collect hosts and storage hardware configuration data and keep documentation current.
· Advanced troubleshooting of hardware and software failures (server, SAN or backup) using vendor documentation, knowledgebase or support services.
· Implements continuous improvement measures.
· Assists in release and migration planning.
· Monitoring and tuning application and database servers and storage to ensure optimum performance.
· Conducts routine hardware and software audits of UNIX servers for compliance with established standards, policies, configuration guidelines and procedures
- Maintains a comprehensive UNIX library of all supporting documentation.
- Works with internal and external groups to support their functions and company success.
- Responsible for developing UNIX strategies and technical standards
- Provides extended business hours support as needed for on-call rotation.
Job Requirements:
- BS in Computer Science, MIS, CIS or a related field or equivalent experience
- Must have 5 years of experience doing UNIX OS support in a HA environment with a strong background with Redhat Linux, Solaris, and AIX.
- Experience with clustering and high-availability solutions such as Oracle RAC, Oracle Solaris Containers, RHEL GFS, and Veritas.
- General knowledge of Linux/UNIX hardware platforms, including oracle/sun, dell hardware.
- Experience with SANs across UNIX and Windows using EMC software and hardware.
- Experience with volume management such as LVM and raw disk.
- Write and augment scripts in various UNIX shells, Perl experience a plus.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation 24X7.
- Experience in an Oracle environment.
- Experience with EMC PowerPath.
- Experience working with monitoring/trending software such as Nagios and Cacti
- Experience with EMC Legato and/or Symantec NetBackup a plus.
- Experience configuring and administering servers running in a virtualized environment
- Self-motivated, resourceful, proactive team player that can work independently and take personal ownership of work assignments
