BEACON is a complex system with 9 full volume databases to support it.
These databases each require over 3 terabytes of data space. These databases are either up or being maintained 24 hours per day.
This includes multiple lower and production environments as well as disaster recovery (DR).
Prior to consolidation BEACON was supported by 5 full time DBAs.
The current DBA is assigned coverage as 24 by 7.
This involves daily data fixes to support routine operations. In addition to the daily operational tasks the DBA is required to resolve database issues such as missing triggers, any slow running queries, and all performance related adhoc questions/issues as they may arise due to infrastructure/network changes.
The databases need to have Oracle patches and upgrades applied routinely.
At present, we have been searching for a FTE resource to fill the position of the DBA who resigned two years ago. We have been actively searching for this vacancy for over 10 months.
Having a dedicated DBA as a U05 Contractor would ensure that we get strong technical skillset from the competitive market and would alleviate the strain on the 2 "shared" resources from the VG DBA team we are using to fill the gap. These two borrowed resources are consistently working overtime to sustain routine operations.
It's been extremely challenging to continuously negotiate and request additional time from these resources with competing priorities within the various agencies.
As we continue our search for the dedicated FTE DBA, it would be highly recommended that we hire a contractor to fill our immediate need.
